Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need for a complete litter box setup?

Three things: the box, the right litter or tray for that box and a few accessories to keep it running smoothly. Start by choosing from our self-cleaning litter boxes, then match it with the compatible cat litter and litter trays. Finish with a litter mat, waste bin liners or a privacy cover from our litter box accessories.

Should I get a self-cleaning litter box or a traditional litter box?

A self-cleaning litter box is the better fit if you want to stop scooping daily, keep odor low between cleanups or manage a multi-cat home. A traditional litter box costs less upfront, needs no power outlet and works well for travel or as a backup box in another room. Many pet parents use both. Our automatic litter box buying guide can help you decide which self-cleaning design suits your cat.

Which litter or tray works with my litter box?

Match the litter to the box. Self-cleaning rake boxes use disposable crystal litter trays, or a reusable tray refilled with pre-portioned crystal litter. Self-cleaning rotating and open-top boxes use clumping litter. A traditional litter box works with loose crystal or natural litter, so you can pick the one your cat prefers. Shop every option on our cat litter and litter trays page.

What is the difference between disposable and reusable litter trays?

Disposable litter trays come pre-filled with crystal litter. When it’s time for a change, you close the lid and toss the whole tray. Reusable trays, available in durable plastic or rust-resistant stainless steel, are emptied and refilled with a pre-portioned bag of crystal litter. Disposable trays are the most hands-off, while reusable trays create less waste and cost less over time. Both are on our cat litter and litter trays page.

Can I use crystal litter in a regular litter box?

Yes. Loose crystal cat litter works in any standard litter box. Remove solid waste daily and stir the crystals so moisture spreads evenly, then replace the litter completely when it stops absorbing. Bagged crystal cat litter comes in single bags and multi-packs.

How many litter boxes do I need?

A common guideline from cat behavior experts is one litter box per cat plus one extra. Two cats would have three boxes, for example. Spreading boxes around the home, ideally one on each floor, gives every cat easy access and helps prevent accidents and territory disputes. A self-cleaning box can count as one of them.

Where is the best place to put a cat litter box?

Choose a quiet, low-traffic spot your cat can reach at any time, away from food and water bowls. Avoid placing it next to loud appliances or in a room that is often closed off. For a self-cleaning litter box, pick a spot near a power outlet on a flat, level floor so the cleaning cycle runs properly.

How do I keep litter from tracking around the house?

Start with a low-tracking litter. Crystal litter is low-dust and doesn’t stick to paws the way clay can. Place a litter mat at the entrance to catch loose granules, and consider a hood or privacy cover to contain scatter. You’ll find mats, covers and hoods in our litter box accessories.

Can I get cat litter delivered automatically?

Yes. Litter Autoship sends crystal litter, trays or refills on a recurring schedule, so you never run out. You save on your first Autoship order and on every recurring delivery, with free shipping on recurring orders. Set it up from any product on our cat litter and litter trays page.

Where can I find replacement parts for my litter box?

Our litter box accessories include replacement power adaptors, waste trap covers, waste bin liners and deodorizers for self-cleaning litter boxes. Check the compatible litter box listed on each product to make sure it fits your model.
