K-9 Cove in Miami Lakes, FL

Location of proposed dog park:

14048 Palmetto Frontage Rd, Miami Lakes, FL 33016

About this community:

The Town of Miami Lakes was incorporated in 2000 and is one of the youngest cities in Miami-Dade County. Located 16 miles north of Downtown Miami and 10 miles from Miami International Airport, the Town is home to approximately 31,000 residents. Miami Lakes is a dog-friendly community recognized by the Mars Petcare Program for meeting the 12 traits of pet-friendly cities. In 2019, Miami Lakes was certified as a Better Cities for Pets!

Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

The Town of Miami Lakes deserves the PetSafe Bark for Your Park grant for K-9 Cove because of the Town’s love for dogs and need to refurbish the Town’s sole dog park! K-9 Cove offers a fun, safe, and off-leash environment that develops paw-sitive interactions between residents and their dogs, while creating a shared green space where the vibrant Miami Lakes community can gather. Residents of all ages and abilities access K-9 Cove along the south side of Palmetto Frontage Road via an ADA-accessible pedestrian and bike path. K-9 Cove is essential to the community, being one of the community’s main attractions and the only off-leash K-9 fun zone. In addition, K-9 Cove is the ONLY designated greenspace recreational area in the Town of Miami Lakes, which is why K-9 Cove means so much to our community and why the Town is in vital need of this Grant.

How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

Located in Miami Lakes, K-9 Cove is the ONLY dog recreational park within the Town. Although K-9 Cove offers a safe recreational green space, the park is dull, given the lack of interactive recreational structures for dogs and pet parents. K-9 Cove contains two separate fenced-in areas for small and large dogs with just a bench in each partitioned area, two doggie drinking fountains, and a joint open-air shelter with two round picnic tables. To utilize the space and foster connections, the Town will renovate the greenspace by adding new play features with a Doggie Crawl, Paws Table, Weave Posts, and Small Hoop Jump course kit to the small dogs’ section of K-9 Cove. In addition, to ensure sanitation and safety, all park equipment will be coated with a green and beige Canine Coat, a specially designed thermoplastic coating that makes all dog park components slip-resistant, urine, and UV-ray resistant.
