About this community:

Hudson, NY, is located on the Hudson River, two hours from New York City. Founded in 1783, Hudson was the first city to be incorporated after the American Revolution. Hudson’s population is small but diverse, both culturally—white, black, Bangladeshi, Latinx—and economically, with a high percentage of artists and entrepreneurs. Known for its scenic location, historic architecture, fine restaurants, cultural venues, and unique shops, Hudson is a little city with a big city vibe.

Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

It took a decade of advocacy and persistence to make the Hudson Dog Park happen. Fund raising for the dog park started in 2014, five years before a location was found in the densely populated two square miles of Hudson. In 2019, the dog park was built, with money raised by the community, on a remediated brownfield owned by the City of Hudson. From Day One, the dog park, just a fenced grassy space, delivered all the promised benefits of a dog park, bringing Hudson’s diverse community together. With input from dog park users and research into best practices, a Master Plan was created, which includes all the desired and recommended dog park amenities. The creation and development of the Hudson Dog Park has been funded solely by donations from the community. A Bark for Your Park™ grant will be a tremendous help in moving forward with the Master Plan.

How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

A basic amenity for a dog park is shade. The Hudson Dog Park, located on a former industrial site, has very little shade. On steamy summer days, the dog park can be unbearably hot both for dogs and for people. A priority in the Master Plan is a shade structure that will provide relief from the hot summer sun. If Hudson wins a Bark for Your Park™ grant, the grant money will be used to build a shade structure, with seating, so the park will be comfortable for all seasons.
