Emergency Disaster Planning for Pets

It's hurricane season, so now's the time to prep your emergency plan for your family, including your pets. A disaster can happen anytime, so even if you don't live in a tornado or hurricane zone, it's good to be ready for anything.

General Disaster Prep Tips

Hurricane & Flood Evacuations

  • Know your area's risks and evacuation zone.
  • Keep an eye on storm forecasts and understand category levels.
  • Have a plan to bring your pets with you if you evacuate.
  • Check for pet-friendly hotels and motels in the area you're evacuating to. Motel 6, La Quinta, Four Seasons, and Best Western chains often have pet friendly policies, and many hotels waive pet restrictions during emergencies.
  • Ask your local shelter about evacuation support. Some will temporarily take your pets or help with pet transportation if you're unable to bring them.

Fire Safety Prep

  • Know where your pet is likely to go. Is his favorite spot under the couch or in your bedroom?
  • Plan the escape routes from your house from every room.
  • Pick a meeting location outside the house for every family member.
  • Have backup plans in case a room or door is blocked.
  • Run a safety fire drill every year so everyone can practice their escape. This is good training to get your pets used to the activity too.
  • Assign roles to each family member. Someone is in charge of getting the cat carrier and bringing the cats out, while someone else must grab the leash and get the dog out.
