Arlington Dog Park in Arlington, NE
Location of proposed dog park:
435 1st St
Arlington, NE 68002
About this community:
The Village of Arlington was originally platted in 1869 under the name Bell Creek. The community sat near the stream Bell Creek for which it was named. On February 2, 1882, Bell Creek’s name was changed to Arlington due to the misrouting of mail caused by the similarity in name of a village to the northwest named Battle Creek. As of the 2010 census, Arlington’s population has reached 1,243 residents.
Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:
The historic flood in 2019 devastated many parts of our small town, and we continue to rebuild and recover. The dog park area, surrounding greenspace, and ballfields are next to the creek and were underwater for six days. The community continues to improve this area to enhance the village of Arlington, which Bloomberg magazine called “The 2nd best place in the nation to raise your kids”. In late 2020, a dog park committee was formed and given land that was flooded and deemed uninhabitable. The committee determined the budget and fundraising plans, created a website and social media and went to work. The community showed great enthusiasm and financial support. In less than a year, $57,000 was raised, and the park was built. The final stages of the park are now underway, with a water fountain, memorial bricks and shelter being installed. The last item will be permanent signage.
How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:
Currently, Arlington Dog Park has two banners hanging on the fence, which is the only signage. The grant would be used for a permanent sign with landscaping surrounding it. It would also include recognition of the Foundations which have given financial support.
