5 tips to introduce cats to crystal litter

Congratulations on committing to a clay- and clump-free future for you and your cat. PetSafe® Premium Crystal Litter – such as that used in the PetSafe® ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box -- is far superior to traditional clay in terms of odor control (five times more effective than traditional clumping clay litter), dust and ease of use. Another big benefit of crystal litter is how much easier it makes scooping and disposing of your kitty’s litter gifts. No one’s going to argue: Scooping stinks . Litter crystals rapidly dry both liquid and solid waste, making scooping a much more palatable task.

But first things first. Your cat may need an acclimation period before crystal becomes her go-to litter source. Here are a few ways to transition your kitty to her new and improved potty.

Ensure privacy.

Make sure your crystal litter box is set up in a quiet, out-of-the way place. Just like you, cats appreciate a little privacy when doing their business. Avoid using crystal litter in a humid environment because that may reduce its otherwise unparalleled odor-control properties. You should also make sure it’s not close to food, because no critter wants to potty near their food source.

Transition slowly.

Some cats may take to their new and improved litter with minimal coaxing. Others may take some time. One thing you can do to build your cat’s confidence with her new crystal digs is to place her old clay litter box (trust us, you’ll be able to get rid of it soon) next to one containing brand-new crystal litter. Sprinkle some crystal litter into the clay litter, and vice versa. Let the old litter box get dirty. Most cats are finicky and will soon be drawn by the siren song of clean, PetSafe® crystal litter.

Do the math.

If you have multiple cats, keep in mind you may need more than one litter box. A good rule of thumb is to limit single litter box usage to only two cats, but some say each cat in a household needs her own litter box. If territorial squabbles arise, it may be harder to acclimate any of your cats to the new litter.

Be patient and positive.

Praise your kitty when she uses the new crystal litter box. Don’t ever be harsh if she fails to do so; that will just inject negativity into the overall transition to crystal litter.

Go full ScoopFree®.

Once your kitty is acclimated to the new litter type, you are both well on your way to making the transition to the ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box and a truly scoop-free existence. Follow the steps above when it comes time to switch to full-time use of the self-cleaning litter box. In some cases, it’s a good idea to leave the new ScoopFree® litter box unplugged for a spell until kitty gets the hang of it. Its automatic self-cleaning litter box features, such as the rake that automatically removes waste and smooths litter, might surprise more sensitive felines if they have not been first acclimated to their new automatic litter box.

If you run into any problems with getting your kitty accustomed to crystal or the ScoopFree® Self-Cleaning Litter Box, the PetSafe® customer care team is always eager to help. Once you have transitioned your cat to her new automatic litter box, you’ll wonder where it has been all your life. Less odor. Less mess. Less stress.
