About this community:

The City of Milwaukee is Wisconsin’s largest city, comprised of 75 unique and diverse neighborhoods nestled on the western shores of Lake Michigan. Milwaukee has a rich history in innovative manufacturing, and in the early 1900’s, it was referred to as the “Machine Shop of the World”. Fast forward to today, Milwaukee continues to reinvent itself and is home to some of the world’s most recognizable brands, including the 2021 NBA Champion, Milwaukee Bucks!

Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

The City of Milwaukee is the most ideal and deserving entrant for a PetSafe® Bark For Your Park™ grant because the downtown area is greatly underserved by public dog park facilities. Downtown Milwaukee is home to over 32,000 residents and an estimated 15,000 dogs. Unlike other peer cities, there are no public dog facilities within miles of the area. Also, a recent survey conducted by Milwaukee Downtown, Inc. showed that over 71% of respondents with pets stated that more and better pet facilities is important to improving livability and quality of life. This dog park deficiency is further highlighted in a 2021 study by Honest Paws that ranked Milwaukee as the third worst city to be a dog. The Bark For Your Park™ grant is very important to supporting the neighborhood organizations, public entities, and private partners aiming to meet this growing need in Milwaukee.

How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

The City of Milwaukee will use the PetSafe® Bark For Your Park™ grant to transform underutilized land that is partially covered by the I-794 overpass and activate it with a new state-of-the-art public dog park with high quality features and amenities. Based on best practices for new urban dog parks, the grant would specifically help fund improvements and amenities that enhance the user experience and maximize the usability of the space. These features include separate small and large dog areas with durable synthetic pet turf and an irrigation system to ensure cleanliness, security lighting for nighttime dog play sessions, multiple agility stations, dog water drinking fountains, and more. With the support from the Bark For Your Park™ grant, the project team will create a new model for activating often forgotten about spaces and turning them into community assets for dogs and their owners alike.
