About this community:

Kauai is known as the Garden Isle and everyone loves the outdoors, especially the dogs. The weather is almost always sunshine perfect even for having the wettest spot on earth in the middle of the island. The small local population of 72,000 is very friendly and loves their pets and there are over 1 million visitors to the island every year, so it is very busy all the time.

Why this community deserves a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

Kauai has 2 dog parks on the whole island and they are hours away from each other. The dog park at the only open-admission animal shelter, the Kauai Humane Society, is centrally located and has lots of room, but desperately needs repairs to the fencing to make it dog and people friendly. A new fence and gate system would enable all of the island’s residents’ access to a safe and engaging dog park without the worry of dogs escaping or feral pigs entering the park. Most of the island’s beaches, parks, and community areas are off limits for off leash dogs making it very hard for dogs to get the social skills they need to be totally awesome. The dogs of Kauai deserve a Bark for Your Park™ grant because they all want the freedom to run and play off leash with their friends and be their most awesome selves!

How this community would use a Bark for Your Park™ grant:

The Kauai Humane Society Dog Park would repair and replace broken fence lines and set up a new double gate entry system to ensure the safety of the dogs and people that walk through. New play structures would be purchased to encourage agility training, learning new tricks, and showing off skills. Small kiddie pools that are easy to clean and sanitize would also be added to the dog park so the pups could have places to cool off on the hot days as well as a chance to play in the water. The funding would also allow for seating to be purchased so the people could have a nice place to relax while their dogs are burning off some of their excess energy. This funding would not just provide the “things” to run a fun dog park, it is funding opportunities for dogs to learn how to be their best.
